Christmas Gifts That Could Threaten Your Business

Employees this Christmas who received or boughtt nice new smartphones or tablets could be presenting hackers the gift of access to your IT systems.

This is a time of year when new devices that are connected to a poorly protected network with inadequate polices risk being a target of an attack.

New devices that are used in your business could be connecting to the wireless network and then onto personal or external cloud systems that might not have protection or been tested.

2014 saw many very high profile cyber-attacks and this is set to continue into 2015 and beyond so don’t get caught out.

A few simple tips

• Be proactive, you’ll be surprised how many businesses aren’t

• Assess your BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy

• Look at implementing a good Mobile Device Management solution

• Set expectations with your users.

Patch Management is no longer an option

Patch management is a critical part of maintaining the security of your systems and network.

If your business is connected to the internet it’s a case of when and not if that you will suffer a security incident of some description in today’s world.

Just how bad yoour business is affected will come down to its IT infrastructure and policies and a major part of this is patch management.

The era of the ‘internet of things’ is gathering pace so this isn’t even just relevant for computers these days but fridges, vending machines, smart meters. You name it they will need patching.

Attackers have got faster at breaching systems, and an unpatched network is like leaving your back door open in an undesirable neighbourhood.

Good patch management is now an essential part of any IT function, it allows you to push out tested patches to server and workstation operating systems and also third party applications and plugging any security holes. You can also quickly deploy patches in emergency situations.

Patch management is now as important as having a good Anti-Virus solution.

Symantec released an interesting safety notice based on a patch this week

Issue: Vulnerabilities in OLE could allow remote code execution

Solution: Patch your systems today, Microsoft Security Bulletin MS140-064

Workaround: Be wary when opening email attachments and avoid clicking unknown links
in emails. Avoid downloading Office files from websites or through file

Epoq IT managed service packages are designed with the future in mind, our Gold and Platinum packages include full patch management giving you peace of mind that your systems won’t be exploited by malicious attacks or infections easily.

Is your business ready for the now?

“Every business will be transformed by digital revolution, regardless of size or industry” Dido Harding, CEO of Talk Talk

Over the next 3-5 years the digital revolution is going to gather an incredible pace, is your business ready for this or even aware of what this means.
You are probably already aware of how reliant your business already is on technology but are you prepared for the rapidly changing IT landscape and both the opportunities and threats this presents.

Three simple questions might help you asses where you are:

1. Are you aware of your recovery time objective in the event of a disaster to minimise costly downtime?

2. Do you have an IT strategy that you review regularly to ensure your business is enabled by technology for growth and keeping up with the competition?

3. Are you aware of new technologies for your business and sectors and also the threats from cyber criminals and disruptive technologies?
If you have answered no to any of the above questions it’s time to think about your IT function and whether it’s a true partnership aligned with your business needs.

We’d like to offer a free consultation on your technology requirements where we will happily bring new ideas to the table for your business that you can use, either at your premises or we can supply the coffee and biscuits at ours.

Vishing is on the rise..

Beware, vishing calls have risen by 56% in the past year. Phone calls from criminals impersonating Microsoft will advise that they are contacting you as a virus has been detected on your computer which is affecting their network. They will then guide you through fixing this and performing various taasks to install malware which allows them to steal data and financial information.

This scam is know as vishing, a voice or telephone based fraud.

Quick tips to keep you safe

1. Microsoft will never simply call you.
2. Never allow an unknown company or caller connect to your computer
3. Only make payments over the phone and internet with a credit card, not a debit card.
4. If you are having IT problems, don’t accept help from a random offer. Choose a provider diligently.

If your business is concerned with the security threats in todays IT landscape please call us for an informal chat either at your premises or come and see us in our offices.
